ONE TREE HILL DISTRICT
FINANCES IN SOUND CONDITION STATEMENT FOR SIX MONTHS “The accounts show the finances of the board to be in a sound condition, the only question requiring special attention being the allocation of the balance of the public works fund,” stated the clerk of the One Tree Hill Road Board in a statement of accounts for the six months ending September 30, submitted at a meeting of the board last evening. The total receipts for the period amounted to £10,301 16s and payments £16,549 Is 9d. The largest individual item of expenditure was public works and payments against this account for the six months aggregated £4,508 9s 8d against £7,655 allowed for the full year, indicating a rate of expenditure in excess of the allocation. At the time of compiling tlie report practically all the tar roads had received a new coat but full expenditure could not be shown. The retarring would amount to £1,585 against £1,500 allowed. Maintenance of untarred roads was estimated to cost £2,904 and the actual expenditure equalled £1,869. This left £1,035 for the second half of the year. The allocation of £SOO had been now practically spent. The balance available for the year according to the original allocation was:—Kerbing and channelling £I,OOO, retarring footpaths £I,OOO, road maintenance £1,035, and sundries, £ll2. a total of £3,147. The balance for road maintenance, etc., £1,147 would have to be supplemented from either the footpath or kerbing rates. Receipts for the sale of water totalled £2,621, an increase over last year, partly due to the abnormal dry summer. The rate statement showed that only 11.1 per cent, of the current year’s rates had been paid, but this position was not abnormal as most ratepayers settled before the imposition of the penalty. Some considerable difficulty had been experienced in getting in arrears which stood at £2,497 on April 1, but a vigorous policy had resulted in £1,630 being paid to date, equal to 63.3 per cent. Part of the balance of £S67 had been handed to the solicitor for collection and the remainder was being paid off by arrangement.
With three exceptions all accounts were in debit, this being due to nonpayment of rates. The overdraft, plus outstanding cheques at September 30, was £2,901 2s sd, which was not excessive for the time of the year. The total overdraft interest for the six months was only £27 11s against which was earned £9 2s 6d interest on fixed deposits. It was decided to discuss the report at a special committee meeting of the board and to report to the next ordinary meeting. The clerk, Mr. A. Leese, was complimented on his report. The building inspector reported that during the past fortnight 13 permits for the erection of dwellings, other buildings and alterations to the total value of £5,702 had been issued. A letter was received from the Post and Telegraph Department suggesting the renumbering of the Great South Road beyond the Harp of Erin. Confusion existed at present owing to numbers commencing again at the Harp. It was decided that the renumbering be done. It was decided that the work of erecting the Dilworth fence on the Great South Road at a cost of £B4 10s 6d be left in the hands of the chairman, Mr. H. B. Dobbie, with power to act. Two tenders for the reinstatement of the Great South Road were received, R. E. Eastman £473 0s 7d and McCarten Bros. £498. As the Auckland Electric Power Board is paying for the work the tenders were referred to it.
