VISITORS NOT WANTED
BROWN’S BAY ATTITUDE BETTER BUS SERVICE OPPOSED Claiming that they were satisfied that th© present bus transport from Brown’s Bay to Devonport, 260 residents and ratepayers of the area petitioned the No. 2 Omnibus Licensing Authority, last evening, not to grant a licence to a company that proposed to give a better service. The ex-chairman of the Waitemata County Council also said his council would do its utmost to prevent bigger buses using the roads. Th© county did not want transport catering for other than residents—visitors and sightseers were only good for the few storekeepers in the bays. . The Marine SuburDs Bus Co., Ltd., for whom Mr. Alderton appeared, offered to supply a service from Brown’s Bay to Devonport with buses having a total carrying capacity of 125. Mr. T. Smith, manager and a director of the Marine Suburbs Bus Co., said that he had negotiated with Mr. Silich, the present bus owner, to buy his business. Mr. E. H. Wallace, for Mr. Silich, said that his client was losing £3 a week now and another bus service would aggravate the situation. Mr. Wallace claimed that at present only 30 people travelled each day. COUNCIL’S ATTITUDE Mr. O’Halloran, member of the Waitemata County Council, said his council opposed the granting of another licence. There were no complaints about the present service. The council would much rather put some inconvenience in the way of holiday-makers than have extra traffic damaging the roads. He admitted that now steamers and launches had ceased running to the bays a good land service was essential. On the motion of the chairman, Mr. E. Aldridge, the application was refused; Mr. Silich being warned to supply a time-table that must be adhered to.
