SCHUBERT’S SPECTACLES
From quite early youth Schubert wore spectacles, and in Vienna just now models of Schubert spectacles are abundantly displayed as part of the commemoration. But people do not wear these spectacles in bed as Schubert frequently used to do, according to the record of a friend with whom he stayed. It is presumed that the composer had the idea that this would save time in the morning when he awoke with an inspiration. At all events we hear that when but half dressed he would go to the piano and improvise. “I write all day,” Schubert once told an inquiring visitor, “and when I have finished I begin again.”
