ALFIERI THE BASSO
HARD-WORKING MEMBER OF OPERA COY. Perhaps one of the hardest-working members of the Fuller-Gonsalez Opera Company Is Signor Antonio Alfieri, who with Fumagalli has borne all the whole of the weighty basso roles during the opera season.
Following is an example of one week’s work: Tommaso in “Bn Ballo” on Monday; Zuniga in “Carmen” on Tuesday and Saturday; Oroveso in “Norma” at the Wednesday matinee; and Sparafucile in “Rigoietto” the same evening; Giarno in “Mignon” on Thursday; and Bartolo in "The Barber of Seville” at the Saturday matinee — a total of seven of the eight performances given during the week. This is indeed a remarkable amount of important work for one artist in a week. Alfieri’s voice is clear, deep, mellow and full of the quality that carries, and his work as an actor is equal to the best. His Sparafucile, the hired assassin in “Rigoietto,” and his comic Don Bartolo in “The Barber” were gems of perfect work.
