VARSITY ROWING CLUB
The first annual report of the Auckland University Rowing Club, which will be presented at a meeting to be held on October 11, refers to the successful introduction of rowing into the sporting life of the college. During the Easter tournament last year, a few enthusiasts got together and organised an unofficial boat race between fours from Victoria and Auckland, the Wellington men winning by a small margin. In November of last year, a club was formed, and an eightoar race against the Victoria Club was held at the Easter tournament this year, Wellington gaining the honour of winning the first varsity boat race held in New Zealand. At the conclusion of this race, a New Zealand varsity eight was selected to meet a Wellington provincial eight, Messrs. Jirooker, Solomon and Ross gaining places in the eight. The club captain, L. E. Brooker, also achieved the proud distinction of being selected for a New Zealand Olympic eight, but lack of funds prevented the team from being sent to Amsterdam. The report expresses appreciation of the work of Mr. C. G. Fearon in coaching the members of the club. The balance sheet shows a credit of £l3 13s Id.
