! BLUE SKIES AND BLUE EYES The blue colour of the sky is generally attributed to the presence of finely divided particles of dust suspended in the air, while finely divided water particles provide another explanation of the colour. Scientists are not, however, entirely in agreement upon this matter. The glorious tints of sunrise and sunset and due to absorption of light. At sunrise and sunset the rays of the sun have to pass slantwise through layers of air, much deeper than at other times, and thus blue light is scattered to a maximum degree, while the red and orange light illuminating atmospheric haze and clouds provides the basis for all the varied wonder of colour. The blue colour of the eye is again due to the scattering of light, this time by means of finely-divided particles suspended in the iris. The light is reflected from the back of the eye, and in the cases of green, brown, and black eyes, the blue colour has . been modified by the coloured layer before the iris.
