SWALLOWED CAUSTIC SODA

DEATH OF MAORI CHILD (Special to TUB SUN) ' ' MASTERTON, Tuesday. At an inquest held to-day before Mr. J. Miller, S.M., concerning the death of a Maori child, of 2£ years, who died in the Masterton Hospital after eating caustic soda, Noti Haeata, mother of the child, said that on Sunday afternoon she was cleaning a kettle with caustic soda. She left the tin of soda on the floor of the kitchen, her children, at the time, being outside. Witness later saw one of the children was standing by the tin with soda on its lips, having evidently eaten some of the contents. The child seemed to be recovering at the hospital, when it developed pneumonia and died. A verdict was returned that death was due to pneumonia supervening on poisoning by the consumption of caustic soda accidentally taken. No blame was attachable w anyone.
