BEEF ADVANCE WESTFIELD STOCK SALE VERY SHORT MARKET The shortest yarding of ox beef seen for many months came forward to Westfield to-day. Premium prices were paid in many instances. Auctioneers’ top quotations were raised to 465, although this figure was exceeded in some instances. Less than three rows of ox beef came forward, and the sale of the steers was over before 11 o’clock. The offering was practically confined to lots on account near-Auckland vendors. North Auckland and Bay of Plenty graziers were not represented to any noticeable extent. The cattle were mostly light to medium-weight sorts, and even the top-priced pens were not exceptionally heavy prime.
Competition was keen and well maintained, values touching the highest levels of the season, with the smaller butchers showing the greatest activity on the higher-priced pens. Few lots were worthy of special mention. E. A. Price, Mangere, topped the market with a* line of 16 big-framed bullocks, prime but not exceptionally well finished, which made to .£2l 10s, the lots going to R. E. Stott, Birkenhead.
B. Reed, Te Kauwhata, was responsible for one of the best quality lines of ox beef in the yard. 16 nuggety, exceptionally well finished, handy weight steers on his account making to £l9 17s *>d, the tops going to A. Jones. Dominion Road. A lino of medium to heavy weight steers on account of W. Vosper. Cambridge, made £l6 15s to £2l ss. Seventeen big framed but not exceptionally heavy prime steers, on account the Estate of Alex. Bell, Pokeno. made to~£l9.
Approximately five rows of cows and heifers came forward to meet with a steady demand at late rates. A firm rone was maintained throughout. The quality, generally, was not high, the offering comprising mostly dairy farm lots of light weight cattle. One of the best quality offerings in the cow and heifer section came from the Estate of Alex. Bell. Pokeno, 44 handy weight well finished but not heavy prime young cattle from there making to £l3 15s, the tops going to Reid. Khyber Pass. H. Robertson, Mangere, was responsible for another line of choice quality handy weight young cows and heifers which sold to £l2 2s 6d. An average yarding of calves met with keen competition. mostly from butchers buying for local values were very firm. There were no heavy runners. A choice- quality medium weight runner on account P. A. Monks. Wharepapa, made £6 16s. Prime venlers made to £5 10s; medium height. £3 15s to £4 4s: light, £2 2s to £3 10s; small and fresh chopped, Ss to 335.
Little more than three and a-half rows of fat sheep met with steady competition. The offering comprised mostly well-finished sheep with a large Percentage of good quality hand-weight wethers.
The market opened rather weakly but quickly strengthened to slightly below last week’s level. In the first row big-framed medium-finished wethers, on account H. Ellett, Mangere, went to Todd Brothers, Grey Lynn, for 4 *>s 9d. Extra choice, prime, heavyweight ewes, on account G. Vosper. Cambridge, went to G. O. Knight. Newton, for 41* 3d. A special pen of two choice quality, shorn hoggets made ’^ 5 *- Medium quality woolly hoggets made up to 345.
