Wreckage Tells Grim Tale

GALES IN THE NORTH SEA Havoc Played on Belgian Coast DYKE RAMPART BROKEN WRECKAGE is floating ashore from the North Sea. great gales and seas having (it is feared) overwhelmed many small craft. ( United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright (Australian ami N.Z. Press Association '

Reed. 1t.25 a.m. LONDON, Monday. Terrific North Sea gales played havoc on the Belgian coast, smashing the sluices at Nieuport. The floods are spreading over the famous battlefield. The same country was inundated by the Belgians in 1914 to save the army. The pier at Zeebrugge was breached, the storm thus repeating the British submarine epic of 191 S. The floods have isolated many houses, and there is widespread destruction and distress.

The troops of the Ostend garrison were dispatched tt' the rescue, and worked all day ramparting with sandbags and attempting to repair the dykes, which are still breached. It is feared many small craft in the North Sea were overwhelmed. Wreckage is already coming to shore. The effect of the gales was felt in England. The water piled tip in the Thames estuary. Heavy storms spread over France, followed by floods from the Alps, demolishing bridges and houses, and doing enormous damage.
