The Yachtsmen’s Calendar
October 6. Ponsonby Cruising Club’s annual dance. October 31. —New Zealand Power Boat Association’s prize night and annual meeting.
AT LAST A FINE WEEK-END 'After an exasperating run of 15 wet week-ends Auckland staged a fine one when boatmen were beginning to lose hope of being able to get on with that outside coat of colour. There was almost feverish activity on all hauling-out sites and a great deal of work has been put through. Several boats are already afloat and within a fortnight a fair number should be down. A good many launches and some sailing craft always make a point of getting away for the Labour Lay week-end cruise. The Richmond Cruising Club will probably hold its usual cruising race for mullet boats on the holiday. CUP FOR MANUKAU LAUNCHES The Manukau Yacht and MotorBoat Club is fortunate in having many interested friends. A new cup to be raced for by launches over the long course round the Huia buoy has been presented by the Kermath engine people. It will carry the firm’s'hame. 1 f GIRL SPEEDER HURT Miss Betty Carstairs, the Englishwoman motor-boating enthusiast, had another bad spill recently, when Estelle 11., one of the two boats which she took to America in her attempt to capture the motor-boat championship, turned over and went to the bottom in the Harms worth race. It was a spectacular upset. Miss Carstairs had four ribs broken, and her mechanic, who suffered internal injuries, was unconscious for days.
