“THE WHEEL OF CHANCE”
Richard Barthelmess has added another classic to his long list of screen successes. In the film version of Fanny Hurst’s short story. “Roulette, titled for the screen “The of Chance, this clever star’s work will be widely acclaimed. Barthelmess enacts a dual role, a clear-cut delineation worthy ot being placed alongside his finest portrayals. The strongly contrasting study of the two roles, those of twin brothers, is an outstandingly powerful piece of work. The passion and dramatic values of the characterisations are finely done, and from the beginning of the story to the climax compel the interest and attention. Barthelmess has never done better work.
Outstanding among Columbia s 1928-29 productions will be such specials as “The Fall of Eve,” by John Emerson and Anita Loos; “Trial Marriage,” by Elizabeth Alexander; ‘The Donovan- Affair,” from the story by Owen Davis; and “The Younger Generation,” from the play “It Is To Laugh,” by Fanny Hurst. Master Pictures will release these specials.
Charlie Murray, with his “million dollar” face, has another splendid comedy vehicle in “The Head Man, a First National picture that furnishes him with an opportunity to display his amazing facility of expression in many hilarious situations and amusing contretemps. The picture has a sweet romance enacted by Larry Kent and Loretta Young, who support the rubberfaced comedian, and with a whimsical touch of pathos to balance the many humorous interludes. Eddie Cline, who made such a hit in “Ladies’ Night in a Turkish Hath,” is funnier than ever in his work with Murray in “The Head Man.”
