PLAZA AND TIVOLI
“THE FOUR FLUSHER” A comedy-drama played by the same stars who made the popular series, “The Collegians,” is now being shown at the Plaza and Tivoli Thetres. This is “The Four Flusher,” in which Marion Nixon and George Lewis have the leading roles. The story commences when Andy Whittaker, an ambitious shoe clerk who has invented an unmarketed arch supporter, meets June Allen on the street and pretends he is an important business man. She buys shoes from him that afternoon and later forgives him the deception. Robert Riggs, son of the owner, finds them dancing together. Andy resigns after Robert belittles him. Meantime an uncle of Andy's returns to town and calls on the bank for the purpose of establishing i a £50,000 trust fund for Andy. Andy, however, has several accidents during the day with this unknown uncle always the goat. Andy visits the bank and the banker is pleased to loan him £2,000, much to Andy’s amazement. The popular outdoor actor, Ken Maynard, is seen in “Code of the Scarlet,” the second attraction on the programme. The action is laid in the Canadian North-West, with Ken playing the part of a Royal North-West Mounted Policeman, sent to a new and lawless
region to maintain law and order. The story, it is said, has an unusual twist for plots of this kind. “Baby June,” a tiny little girl only four years old, presents a turn on the stage at these theatres. She sings and dances, turns somersaults, and gives character sketches in her bright way.
Billie Dove is soon to complete “The Night Watch,” directed by Alexander Korda. This story of certain strange happenings aboard a French cruiser on the eve of the World War is one of the most powerful she has ever had. Donald Reed, Paul Lukas and others appear in support.
Impressive scenes of the Battle of Jutland are the outstanding feature of a well-acted and attractively-staged romance which is soon to be released throughout New Zealand. “When Fleet Meets Fleet” is a romantic drama based upon facts which actually occurred, and contains one of the strongest dramatic plots centring on a friendship before the war of two naval commanders, one British and the other German, and their love for an English girl. Countess Agnes Esterhazy portrays the English girl, Henry Stuart is the English commander, and Bernard Goetske the German.
