LAWN TENNIS
PATTERSON AND HAWKES (From Our Own Correspondent) SUVA, September 27. “I have done for ever with Davis Cup tennis,” said Gerald Patterson, who passed through Suva on the Sierra on his way back to Australia, with J- B. Hawkes. Patterson said he could no longer neglect his business to undertake long tours. France, he believed, would retain the Davis Cup for at least two or three years, none of the young Americans showing enough brilliance to be strong contenders. The experience Crawford and Hopman had gained would be of great benefit to Australian tennis. Both would be worthy representatives of Australia in future Davis Cup tennis, and he felt they would show very rapid improvement when they had a chance to settle down in Australia to some steady practice. None of the Australians had any alibis; they had. always been beaten by better men. Hawkes played two exhibition sets with H. Freeman, the Fiji singles champion, beating him 6— l, 6—4.
