Juveniles Sprint Before an Ellerslie Crowd
TWO DISPLAY RARE SPEED With very few of the visiting two-year-olds not having raced, and not a large contingent in commission at Ellerslie this season, it was only to be expected that the youngsters’ parade at Ellerslie on the occasion of the Pakuranga Hunt Club’s meeting would attract a small field. And so it proved, for the number that lined up comprised eight, five hailing from Ellerslie stables. The majority of them failed to show brilliance at the barrier, but Mr. T H Lowry's Clever, a daughter of Psychology and Miss Cute, jumped out very smartly to lead throughout the furlong flutter and finish practically on terms with Lady Suzanne, who also got away smartly, the time being 14 2-5 for the furlong. Clever, who is trained by F. Davis, ran fourth in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui, her only start to date, and her next appearance will be in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday, a race in which she should show to advantage. Lady Suzanne (Surveyor Lady Potoa). gave indications of having plenty of pace, for when she had settled down she displayed a fine turn of speed, and was moving very attractively at the end. The chestnut flly is trained by R. E. Brown, who earlier in the day won the principal flat event, the Jellicoe Handicap, with Thursby. LIKELY YOUNGSTERS J. Williamson was represented in the parade by two colts, the Australianbred Treclare—Headlight youngster, the other being by Tea Tray from Cultriform. Neither has been named as yet. The latter was going very well in third place at the finish. The Absurd—Pennon two-year-old, Ceremony conspicuous through white markings, screwed as the tapes were released, and consequently failed to get away. He was allowed to move comfortably at even pace over the furlong. Ceremony hails from the stable presided over by W. Rayner, private trainer for Mr. G. M. Currie. J. Buchanan’s pair comprised Neil (Lucullus —Little Flower) and Blue Grey (Palkyrian Mumble), and although this couple were not prominent over the journey, the outing would accomplish much as regards education. An unnamed youngster by Carl Rosa from Idra completed the batch, and although not required to do his best, he shaped nioely. .
