SIR AUSTEN PRAISED
DEVOTION AND PATIENCE British Official Wireless RUGBY, Saturday. The Prime Minister, Mr. Baldwin, last evening addressed a mass meeting of the delegates of the Conservative Conference. He devoted most of his speech to *he Government’s record, and to the Conservative policy in domestic affairs. He first, however, paid a particularly warm tribute to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Sir Austen Chamberlain. Mr. Baldwin said: “The whole country and the whole of Europe, has recognised the devotion, skill and patience with which Sir Austen has bandied foreign affairs for four years. I have every hope and belief that he will handle them for four years more.
“At Locarno and in Egypt, with conciliation, firmness and resolution to protect the interests, and in some cases the lives, of our own people, ne has constantly pursued peace. A great part of the credit of what has been done in Europe in that direction during these four years belong fairly to him, and in that cause he has nearly worn himself out.”
