MILFORD CLUB OPENS The Mayor of Takapuna. Mr. J. w. | Williamson, officially opened the courts pI the Kitchener Park Recreation riub. Milford, on Saturday. qr. Williamson expressed hope that inter-olub matches would be arranged between the new club and the older Takapuna Club. A competition was played during the afternoon, the results being as follow: \f,rr B Chalmers, 14 points; runnersm A. Hailing and A. P.urton, each 12 neints. Ladies: Mrs. C. Hfvwood. 13 points; runner-up, Mrs. Willann, 12 newly-formed club has a member- I ship of 26 players already. PLK.EK.OHE CLUB The West End Tennis Club. Pukekohe, opened the season in fine weather on Saturday. There was a large attendance, including visitors from the Mauku, Pukekohe Hill St. James’s. Buckland and Pukekohe Clubs. The president of the West End Club, Mr. E. J. Adams, declared the courts open for play, and Mrs. Adams served the first ball. WHAKATANE CLUB At the annual meeting of the Whakatane Tennis Club officers were elected for the ensuing year as follow:—President, Mr. N. Carter; vice-president, Mr. K. Knight; secretary, Mr. S. U. Beckett; treasurer. Mr. C. S. Armstrong: committee, Mrs. Powdrell, Miss F. Bell, Miss p Allan, Messrs. A. E. Powdrell, W. G. Russell. J. M. Hobin; club captain, Mr. \ E. Powdrell; auditor, Mr. L. Buddie; finance committee, president, secretary and Mr. J- M. Hobin. The president’s annual report stated that eight matches had been played during the season and the club teams had won all except those against Matata. The B team had retained the Watt Cup. The coming season would sec another trophy, the Dunlop Shield, made available for competition throughout the Bay of Plenty. The thanks of the association were due to the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association for its interest and consideration. Severe financial loss had been sustained by the club the destruction of the club’s pavilion. As a result of objections the Assessment Court had finally reduced the rateable value of the • lab’s property from «C 285 to £l5O. The balance sheet did not show a very sound wtate of affairs. The matter of raising funds to build a new pavilion was left in the hands of the committee. PATERANGI CLUB The Paterangi Tennis Club decided at it* annual meeting to join the Waikato West Sub-Association again. The following officers were elected — President. Mr. S. C. Macky; vice-presi-dents Messrs. O. Finch. \\ . C. Macky, w. C Germann, C. J. Spiers. W. Rhodes, Norton, Shaw. A. Benton: joint secretaries, Miss R. Macky and Mr. A. Benton; men’s committee, Messrs. G. Finch, jun., J. White, R. Head. S. Rhodes, L. Spiers, S. Germann, L. Kerb, Richardson, G. Bowman; ladies’ committee. Mesdames F. Ryburp, S. Smith, S. C. Macky, A. Benton, Misses Bell. Finch, E. Macky, Gerratt. Shaw, Rhodes and Head; delegates to sub-association, Messrs. Macky, Benton; selection committee, Mrs. Ryburn, Messrs. Benton, Macky. It was decided to open the season next Saturday. NGATARINGA CLUB The Ngataringa Tennis Club (Stan- j ley Bay) will open its season on October 13: and will hold an American tournament during the Labour Lay break for members and friends. A trophy has been donated by Kohn’s, jewellers, for an annual handicap, which will be open to lady members who have not won a Ngataringa Club trophy. When play commences visitors will find that tho netting wire at the western end has been moved out to proper width, remedying a grievance of last year. A court that was troubled with rain water accumulation has had attention also. Before the end of 1928 the club will possess a handsome pavilion, the necessary finance having been arranged. Mr. S. Bates, the exceedingly energetic secretary of the club, has just wound up an art union that realised £l3O and has ready for presentation in the Town Hall Concert Chamber on October 4 a smart comedy entitled “Silken Cords.” DARGAVILLE CLUB Officers of the Largaville Tennis Club have been elected as follow: Patron, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates; president, Mr. T. C. French; vice-presidents, Messrs. B. S. Angus and E. R. Munn; club captain, Mr. F. C. Gould; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. H- Gossett; auditor. Mr. E. R. Munn: delegate to Northern Wairoa Tennis Association, B. S. Angus; delegates to North Auckland Tennis Association. Messrs. B. S. Angus and E. H. Stoddart; general committee. Misses Phyllis Harding', L. Wunsbone and R. Kimber and Dr. Greville, Messrs. S. Harding and J. Penally; selection committee, Miss M. Dargavill© and Mr. F. C. Gould. Mr. and Mrs. T. C. French were elected Ufe members of the club. TENNIS AT GLENEAGLES OLLIFF DEFEAT: ANDREWS (Australian and N.Z. Press AssociationJ (United Service) LONDON, Sunday. At the lawn tennis tournament at Gleneagles. in the final of the women’s singles. Miss Boyd defeated Miss Xuthall. 9—7, 6—4. In the men’s singles. Olliff defeated Andrews (New Zealand), B—6, 3—6, 6—3. In the doubles Miss Nuthall and Mrs. Watson defeated Miss Boyd and Mrs. Barron, 10 —S» 6—o. In the mixed doubles Crole Rees and Miss Nuthall defeated Olliff and Miss Boyd, 6 —2, 6—3. AMERICANS PLAY BRITISH (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LOS ANGELES, Saturday. A representative team of American lawn tennis players yesterday began a series of nine matches against a team of British Davis Cup players. Id the singles, Doeg (America), defeated Collins. o—6. 6 —4. 6—4; Austin (Britain) defeated Keith Gledhill (Santa Barbara), 7—5. 6 —4. In the doubles, Berkley Bell and Vanryn (America) defeated Gregory and Higgs. 6—3. 6 —l, 6 — l. In the matches to-day, Bell ( America) defeated Godfrey, 9-—7, 4—6, 6 —4; Vanryn defeated Higgs. 6—2. 6—2.
