ATHENIAN CLUB IN A SPRING GARDEN Spreading boughs of apple blossoms with bowls of stately arum lilies and greenery and festooned streamers of blue and gold, were used with great effect for the decoration of the Auckland Amateur Operatic Society’s llall on Saturday evening, when the Athenian Club held one of its fortnightly socials. An enjoyable musical and elocution ary programme had been arranged, and included items by Miss Crook, Miss D. Youd, Messrs. J. Mashier, Swan, Baird, S. Pritchard and IX Wrathall. The Athenian Dance Band, under the leadership of Miss Bush, was in its usual good form, and provided excellent dance music. Miss Nell Appleyard was hostess and received the members and visitors wearing a charming frock of wistaria mauve georgette with iridescent sequinned motifs and a shawl to tone. W. 23 cm mens, of Taneatua, and Air. Robert Gregon Stevenson, son of Air. and Airs. J. Stevenson, of Blenheim, took place at St. George’s Church, Whakatane, last week. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. C. Brown. The bride wore a charming frock of rose bengaline, with a smart hat to match. She carried a shower bouquet of stock and anemones. The bridesmaid, Aliss Isabelle Semmens, was in forget-me-not crepe de chine, and a largo picture hat. Mr. Bert Hyland carried out the duties of best man. After the ceremony the relatives of the bride and groom attended a wedding breakfast at the residence of the bride’s parents. Later Air. and Airs. Stevenson left by car for Rotorua and Hamilton, en route to Waimata, where Air. Stevenson has been transferred. A few days before the wedding a sift evening was held in the Taneatua Half in honour of Aliss Rona Semmens and Air. Robert Stevenson. It was largely attended, and dancing was indulged in till a late hour. During the evening, Air. Walter Reid, chairman of the Whakatane County Council, referred to the esteem in which the guests of the evening were held in the district, and congratulated Air. Stevenson on his promotion. &

Mrs. Empen, hyacinth blue crepe de chine. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE SWANSON BRANCH The Swanson branch of the Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on Wednesday. The birthday of the institute falling upon the same date a big cake, made by Mrs. Insley, occupied the place of honour. The guest of the day was Aliss Spencer, chief of New Zealand Women’s Institutes. After cutting the cake the chief made a short speech extolling the spirit of friendship and help which was the basis of the institute. Airs. Jvennings, of Devonport, gave a beautifully illustrative address upon organdie flower-making, some exquisite blooms being shown. There was a large attendance, including several visiting members from Henderson.
IN FANCY DRESS CHILDREN’S DANCE Over 90 children took part in a fancy dress ball held in the Hibernian Hall, Dargaville, on Friday. The function was arranged by the Children of Alary in aid of their stall fund in connection with the forthcoming Catholic bazaar. The hall was prettily decorated for the occasion, and after the children’s session the floor was occupied by a large number of adults. The music was supplied by the Happy Four Orchestra Airs. Aliss Enid Jones, president, and her co-workers reaped the fruit of their labour in seeing the ball brought to such a successful issue. QUEEN CARNIVAL ENDS MISS BENNETT WINS The winner of the All Saints’ Queen Carnival, which ended on Saturday, is Aliss Norene Bennett, the Choir Queen, who received 24,000 votes. The Herne Bay Queen, Aliss Clare Brown, was second, with 21.021 votes, and the Children’s Queen, Aliss Eileen Hunter, with 14,514 votes, was third. In support of the Choir Queen a bring-and-buy fair was rteld on Saturday at the home of Airs. C. F. Bennett, Hamilton Road, Herne Bay. The garden was bright with spring flowers and the stalls were decorated with coloured streamers. Those in charge of ilie various stalls were:—Gift stall, Airs. English: flowers, Airs. Alayson, Airs. Coppins; character reading, Mrs. Pridgens ; shooting gallery. Air. G. C. Codlin; bull board, Mr. W. Averill; nail driving, Air. Idle. Afternoon tea was served on the verandah by Airs. C. F. Bennett, Aliss Cawkwell and Aliss Jenkins.
CLICK CLACK CABARET On Saturday evening the Click Clack Cabaret was the scene of several bright dance parties, for which Air. Clyde Howley and his famous Internationals provided the most delightfully new music. . Clyde Howley also entertained the dancers with one of his inimitable interpretations of the Black Bottom, and Air. Alan Brown delighted them with a marimba solo.
