SABBATH EXODUS
AUCKLAND IN THE SUN LURE OF ROAD AND BEACH Blue sky and sunshine, heartening relief after stormy days, lured Auckland into the open yesterday. It was the first spring-like Sunday, and most people must have responded to the urge to get away from the city. All the motor roads were crowded during the day w’ith cars speeding along to the popular resorts. North and south they went, and a toll taken at the Whau bridge alone showed that 1,440 cars passed over it between three and six o’clock. These were the motorists who had been to the Waitakeres, Muriwai, and the upper reaches of the harbour. The steamers running to Rangitoto and Waiheke carried full loads of passengers, and there was also a heavy exodus to the North Shore beaches. Many people paid the first of the season’s visit to Milford, Cheltenham and Takapuna, and those beaches were thronged with the first of the sun-bathers. Even the sea itself had a lure, and there was a sprinkling of bathers. The city had its attractions, too, and the Zoo was patronised by the biggest crowd it has had for months.
