TITLE PLAY AT MIDDLEMORE Miss Upham Brilliant FIREWORKS were the order at Middlemore this morningwhen the fourth round of the New Zealand Ladies’ Golf championship was played. Miss V. Upham, Miramar, provided the star turn by going out in two over fours in a fresh wind with overcast conditions.
Most of the matches provided something thrilling, and several were won by substantial margins. The results are shown in the table below. Third Round Fourth Round Miss G. Upham, 19th. Mrs. Banister, 4—2. Banister, at 20th. Mrs. Richter, 1 up. Gaisford, 6 —5. Miss Gaisford, 4—2. Miss Acheson, 5—3. Miss Payton, 4—3. Payton, 2—l. Mrs. Stout, 7—5. Chrystall, 5—4. Miss Chrystall, 2—l. Culling, 4—2, Miss Culling, 1 up. Miss B. Gaisford, Marton, was not pressed to secure her win from Mrs.. Richer, the middle-of-the-Island champion. After the first two holes had changed hands, Miss Gaisford produced some pretty golf, and in par figures took the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh securing a margin that her opponent could not reduce. The only difference between Mrs. Stout, Wellington, and Miss Chrystall over the first third of the journey was in two brilliant mashie shots that Miss Chrystall laid cold at the fourth and fifth, winning both holes in under par. Miss Chrystall carried too many guns, however, and became dormy five before going to tho next round. BRILLIANT SCORE
Miss V. TJpham, Miramar, started away in brilliant fashion against Miss F. Rathbone, Middlemore, scoring 4,4, 4,4, 5,4, to be sup at the sixth. Miss Rathbone did not have a look in until the seventh, where a three gave her a win. Miss Upham, nothing daunted, went on to be out in the brilliant jscore of 38. She followed this with two fours and a five, to win 8 and 6.
A couple of matches behind Mrs. Guy Williams, two or three over fours was five up on Mrs. Russell Grace in the first five holes, the next going to Mrs. Grace. Mrs. Williams went on to win easily.
Mrs. Williams won Saturday’s bogey 1 up.
Long leads in* the early stages appeared to be the order for Miss G. Upham had also started away with the first four holes on her side of the card, against Mrs. Banister, but a couple of lots of three putts on her part allowed Mrs. Banister to reduce the lead to two at the 12th, where she had another chance, and threw it away with three putts.
Mrs. Banister, the sole remaining contestant from the Titirangi contingent, was suffering from a bad cold, but in any case Miss Upham was playing very nice golf. Miss Upham failed to stand up to the strain, however, and never looked like getting a three-footer on the 15th, and duffed her third at the 16th. The two were all square at the end of the 18th, and went on to the
20tli before -Mrs. Banister got the decision. Mrs. Banister’s homeward journey was done in 3,4, 5,3, 4,4, 5, 4, 5—37.
Miss M. Payton, Hotorua, was playing too steadily for Miss Acheson, Nelson. She was two tip going to th© 31th. where the play was thrilling. Miss Acheson placed a nice second two feet from tho pin, just missing a bunker on tho way. Miss Payton went one better, hit the pin with her second, and laid a dead stymie, winning a par four hole with 3 to 4. She won on the 17th. GALLERY GAME-
The gallery game was between Miss Culling, Auckland, and Mrs. T. S. Weston, Wellington, holder of the Auckland privincial title. There was little between the pair until the turn, where Miss Culling was one down, but she started home, 3,3, 4,3, 4, and was then three up. Mrs. Weston took three putts from 10ft on the 15th, and left Miss Culling dormy. Miss Culling won the next in par, and the match. Mrs. Weston had a very decided advantage off the tees.
Mrs. Hughes gave Miss Oliver Kay a fight all the way. after winning the first, but after the turn Miss Kay went ahead easily, to win 4 and 3.
