POLICEMEN ARRESTED

SENSATION IN AMERICA BRIBERY AND CONSPIRACY (United Service J Received 10.45,a.m. PHILADELPHLA, Thurs. A most sensational development in the grand jury investigation of bootlegging and gang warfare, and alleged police corruption, came at midnight with the arrest of the police captain and 22 policemen on charges of extortion of bribery and conspiracy. Among the prisoners were seven sergeants and two City Hall detectives. The police captain is Charles Cohen. They were taken into custody outside the office of District Attorney Monaghan, where they were under examination for four hours. All were placed in the cells at the City Hall, awaiting v a hearing before Judge Lewis, wlio ordered the investigation. Two other police captains, half a dozen city detectives and Matthew Patterson, Republican organisation wardleader and a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives were also arrested.
