CHEAPER GOLF WANTED

A PROMINENT New Zealand golfer, who lias just returned from Australia, emphasises the crying need for cheaper golf by the establishment of municipal links. Point is given to his remarks by the announcement of the Mayor (Mr. G. Baildon) at a meeting of the Sports Protection League this week that the question is at present being considered by the City Council. Golf costs far too much in Auckland. The residents of small towns and hamlets up and down the country are much better oft' than city folk who would like to play the game, hut find the cost prohibitive. The day is gone when golf was regarded as the prerogative of the “idle rich,” or a stepping-stone for those with social aspirations. Municipal links have proved a payable proposition in other centres, and it* is long past time a progressive move in this direction was made in Auckland, the first city of the Dominion.
