OTAHUHU BOROUGH The Otaliuhu Borough Council decided last evening to ask the Manukau County Council to pay the liremen's expenses when attending tires in their district, this to be in addition to the standing subisdy of £lO per annum already agreed on. A donation of £5 5s was granted to the Otahuhu branch of the Plunket Society. The Papakura Town Board rejected the terms suggested for the services of the combined bodies’ traffic inspector. A donation of £2 2s was made to the Otahuhu branch of the Myers Kindergarten. The traffic inspector reported a decided improvement in the control of the traffic from the Transport Company’s garage, and- it was agreed to allot stopping places for the buses in front of the garage. The Mayor reported that no advice had been received from the Public Works Department concerning the granting of a subsidy on the concreting of the Great South Road. Or. Arlington’s proposal to institute tollgates was ruled out of order. The clerk advised the removal of a couple of the slabs of concrete on the boundary of the district. It was ultimately decided to again write to the Minister of Public Works, enclosing a recent tally made by the traffic inspector, when €73 motors passed a given point on the Great South Road. MATAMATA AFFAIRS Pupils of the Matamata Junior High School accorded Mr. and Mrs. K. H. O’Halloran a complimentary social and dance, prior to their departure to Auckland. Presentations were made from the pupils and from the football teams, for which Mr. O’Halloran was the coach. The staff of the Junior High School also presented Mr. O’Halloran with a parting gift. * * * At this week’s meeting of the Matamata Town Board, Mr. J. Buchanan (chairman) presided. The Fire Brigade was granted the use of the town hall for a social and dance. The proceeds are to be utilised for the purchase of two new uniforms. Messrs. A. Stewart, J. H. Hawes and J. Buchanan were appointed the board’s representatives on the Fire Prevention Council for the ensuing period. Owing to the danger to traffic caused by the acute corners at Meuru Street and the railway crossing, the foreman was instructed to carry out improvements. The extra width of metal lias already been added to both sides of the Mata-fata-Tauranga main highway in the town area. In the summer it is intended to complete the bitumen surfacing, giving a 30ft roadway on each side. The board recently made a claim from the Matamata County Council for half the cost of upkeep of electric lights on the contiguous boundaries. In forwarding a cheque for £6B 12s 6d, the council acknowledged its ATHOLL REPORTS.— A radio message received by Henderson and Macfarlane states that the steamer Atholl is expected to arrive at New Plymouth on Monday from Nauru Island. The vessel has cargo of phosphates for discharge at New Plymouth and Wanganui.
WAIUKU NOTES A public meeting was held at Wal. uku to discuss ways and means of having a pavilion erected at Massev Park. Mr. J. D. Chalmers, who pre sided, explained that the present am til building was totally inadequate for the needs of the various sports bodies. It was resolved that the members of the Town Board, the Domain Board with those present, should form a committee and endeavour to raise the necessary funds. The secretary of the Domain Board, Mr. J. J. A. James, was asked to write to the various sports bodies asking them to be represented at a to on October 4. The annual prize-giving social of the Waiuku Golf Club was held this week, when a good number of golfers and friends were present. The president of the club, Mr. A. White, in presenting the trophies won by the members during the year, heartily congratulated the winners on their success. Prize-winners were: Ladies: Senior Championship, Miss U. Muir; runner-up trophy, Miss E. Barriball. Junior Championship: Miss E. Barnaby; runner-up trophy, Mrs. C. C. Munro. Brs. Bisclioff Barriball’s Cup (seniors)/: Mrs. Harkness: runner-up trophy, Miss J J. Muir. Mrs. BisehofC Barriball’s Cup (juniors): Miss Sullivan; runner-up trophy, Miss Motion. Mrs. W. Claude Motion's Trophy: Mrs. J. Forbes. Duff Cup: Miss J. Ducker. Mrs. C. C. Munro’s Trophy (for juniors): Miss M. Fenwick. Mrs. Barker’s Trophy: Miss W. West. L.G.U, silver medal: Mrs. J. KING COUNTRY NEWS In wet and windy weather the Taumarunui Rod and Gun Club held a well-attended shoot, the results being: Sweepstake Handicap, 5 birds.—From a sextette tie for first place the finfd was: J. O’Donnell 3, W. Peek 2, E. Lightfoot 3. A. J. Richards’s Cup and Sweepstake Handicap. 3 4 birds.—E. Lightfoot (10yds.), W. Peek (15) and T. Worsley (13) tied, and divided the first and second money. In the shoot-off for the cup Lightfoot won. This is the winner’s second success for the trophy, and if he wins next time it will becomo his property. W. Pees’s trophy and Hancicap Sweepstake, 7 birds.—J. O’Donnell and R- F- Harris tied for first and divided first and second money. O’Donnell won the trophy in the shoot-off. A highly popular Rugby referee, Mr. C. M. Williamson, is leaving the Taumarunui district to return to Hawke’s Bay. At the last meeting of the Taumarunui Subunion the chairman, Mr. Stronach, and various other speakers referred to the great assistance to good football Mr. Williamson had been this season, and wished him success in the future. Responding, Mr. Williamson said that though the standard of football in the King Country was not high as compared with some other places, the sporting spirit of the players would be hard to beat Reporting to the Wanganui River Trust on the condition of the river, the supervisor, Mr. T. W. Downes, stated that for the past two months the river had been in a more or less flooded state, but so far as it was possible to judge from inspections, no undue shoaling or snagging up had taken place on the whole length of the waterway. Work was well advanced for the coming season's traffic. The trust discussed matters in regard to taking over the boat service, in committee, and it was resolved to call a special meeting should it be necessary. Included in the Public Works Estimates for work on main highways in the King Country are the following important allocations: Te Kuiti- Bulls (via Taumarunui). free £27.325, £4 for £1 (£100), £1 for £1 (£400), total £ 27,825. Engineering surveys in the Xo. 6 Highways District, which includes most of the King Country, are given a free grant of £55,767. A King Country convention of workers interested in furthering the prohibition movement was held in Taumarunui this week, various meetings being addressed by the Rev. John Patterson. the Rev. Robert Haddon, Mr. C. R. Edmond, of the Xew Zealand Allij ance, and Mr. S. M. Dixon, of Wanganui, area organiser. The meetings were presided over by the Rev. C.
