TOWN HALL CONCERT
GRAMMAR SCHOOL PUPILS A large audience almost filled the Town Hall last evening, when the Auckland Grammar School gave a concert. Orchestral numbers, songs, both solo and choral, items by the Dramatic Club, and a very fine gymnastic display, were given by pupils, making a very pleasant evening’s entertainment. The orchestra, under the direction of Mr. F. M. Price, gave a spirited performance of Hoizman s wuitz, inning Fight.” They also played “The Bouquet,” by LaurenJeau; “Darktown Belles " by Paulsen, and “Glow It orm,’ by Paul Lincke. Offenbach’s wellknown “Barcarolle” was given with great success, as a clarinet duet by Sir C. N. Xicholls. P. W. Estoe, F. K. Garry and F. O. Nops, and a piccolo solo. “Polka." by King, was played by N. Johnstone and the orchestra. The choir, directed by Mr. K. J. Dellow, sang Shaw’s “Evening Pastorale” excellently. In their other numbers notably "Hail, Smiling Morn.” by Spofforth, the bass was a little too strong for the boys’ voices. However, later In the evening this was not so noticeable, and “Annie Laurie" came out very well. An old English song, "The Troubadour.” was sung by A. L- Litt in an unusually clear, lively treble, which could easily be heard throughout the hall. D L. Campbell sang "Break o’ Day," by Sanderson, and "Eileen AJannah," by Thomas. Members of the Dramatic Club gave character sketches from Dickens’ "Serjeant Buzfuz” and "Mrs. Gamp,” in particular, being excellent. They also performed, with some success. Lord Dunsany’s one-act play, "The Lost Silk Hat." All extremely well-finished gymnastic display was also given, some very daring tricks being done on the horizontal bar and from the spring-board. Particularly exciting was the "grand circle,” performed by a senior boy on the bar, and the exhibition of somersaulting from the spring-board.
