“BIRD OF PASSAGE”
MAORI GAOLED FOR THEFT DRUNKEN BRAWL IN HOTEL (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. Although charged with robbery with violence at the Police Court to-day, a Maori named Toi Pere, was successful in having the charge amended to one of theft through the advocacy of Detective White. Pere pleaded guilty to the theft of £ls from John McMuliin in an hotel at Hamilton last Wednesday. Detective White said several Maoris including accused and complainant were under the influence of liquor. An altercation occurred, during which Pere assaulted McMillin and decamped with the money. Accused was a reliable man when he kept oft drink. He had just come out of gaol and bad previous convictions dating back to 1917.
"Like all Maoris, he is a 'bird of passage,’ ” added the detective. _ “He is not usually given to violence.”
Messrs W. K. Mason and J. H. Gittos. j.p’s., sentenced accused to one month’s imprisonment to be followed by six months’ probation, during which lie would have to make restitution.
