FUEL FOR SOUTHERN CROSS
AVIATORS PRAISE SPIRIT A graceful tribute to Union motor .spirit is contained in a letter to the Atlantic Union Oil Company, Ltd., which Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith and Flight-Lieutenant C. T. PUlm have written and signed as cocommanders of the Southern Cross trans-Pacific flight, following the magnificent culmination of their pioneer enterprise. They convey their sincere thanks for the excellent service that the Atlantic Union Oil Company’s organisation rendered them throughout the flight, and offer their congratulations upon the exceptional quality of Union motor spirit and Atlantic oil- They say throughout the most trying hours of their 7,305 miles’ journey to Australia, through storm and extreme rise and fall of temperature, their three motors never missed a beat. Union motor spirit was the only fuel used and the consumption was 32 American gallons an hour from Oakland to Honolulu, 34 gallons an hour from Honolulu to Suva and 33 gallons an hour from Suva to Brisbane. They refer to the abnormal flying conditions at high altitudes they encountered as being responsible for the variation in consumption. The letter concludes with the statement that no recommendation of theirs can be too emphatic concerning the quality of Atlantic Union products. On the completion of the Tasman flight, Mr. Ulm said: “Fuelling ana on were perfect as usual. In view what the bus came through last night we are satisfied that these three whirlwind engines when properly fuelled, oiled and cared for. will go through any weather, anywhere.”
According to B. G. Koether, director of sales section, the Atlantic City exhibit of General Motors Corporation, * show room of 21,000 square feet and located on the Boardwalk, was visited in 1927 by a million persons, representatives of almost every country in th* world.
