Council of Women

i i j LEAGUE OF NATIONS UNION ; j ASKS COUNCIL TO SUPPORT } DISARMAMENT MANY QUESTIONS DISCUSSED The monthly meeting of the Auckland Branch of the National Council of ■Women was held in the Y.W.C.A. last evening, when Afiss Carnachan, president, preside® over a fair attendance of members. . Correspondence was first dealt with. A letter had been received asking for the support and co-operation of the council in connection with a proposed street collection to raise funds for flt-ting-up wireless equipment at the Auckland Hospital. Besides the whole of the top floor of the main building, it was planned to equip the children’s ward, Princess Mary’s Hospital. The constitution of the council prevented it as a body from assisting in this direction, but Aliss Carnachan pointed out that the council delegates could take the appeal to their various societies so that they could individually assist by collecting.

The League of Nations Union had forwarded a communication stating that the Melbourne headquarters was organising joint action throughout Australia and New Zealand in planning meetings in favour of disarmament on Armistice Bay. It was requested that local committees, representative of all sections of society, be set up and the National Council of Women were invited to have a representative delegate on the committee which is to organise the meeting to be held shortly in Auckland. It was decided that the secretary, Miss Flatt, should represent the council on this committee. HIRE-PURCHASE EVILS

A letter received from the secretary of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children intimated that the society had unanimously passed the following resolution: “That the National Council of Women be asked to investigate the hire-purchase system as it afreets young women and children J” The subject of the cash-order system and its alarming growth in this city was then brought up and discussed. A resolution was passed and will be forwarded to the Bominion executive approving of the action of the Government in setting up a commission to investigate the cash-order system. With the resolution * would be forwarded a strong recommendation that in each centre of the council/ or wherever there is a branch of the council, a statement upon the subject should be prepared and sent in to the Government Commission for its consideration. In connection with the election of Airs. Ford Williams, of WcMhi, to the Waihi Borough Council, it was decided to send a letter from the Auckland branch of the council congratulating Mrs. Williams on being the first woman to attain that position. The following remit was received: “The Auckland branch of the National Council of Women considers that the constitution as regards representation attending conference should be revised and some similar system adopted as now pertains to the representation on local branches.” The subject was discussed at some length and finally a sub-committeo was set up to investigate. Aliss Jackson was appointed convener. DOMINION CONFERENCE In connection with the Bominion Conference to be held in Wellington in a few months time, ways and means of raising funds to meet the necessary expenses were discussed. A sub-com-mittee was formed, with Mrs. AlcNair as convener. Mrs. R. Watson read her report on the investigations that had been pursued in connection with the effect of preservatives in foods upon the health of the general public. Authorities regarded the excessive use of preservatives as a great menace to the health of the people and the council was urged to make a move in regard to the prevention of their use. It was decided to gather more information before taking steps in the matter and a sub-committee, with Mra. Watson as convener, was set up to further investigate the subject.
