METROPOLITAN HANDICAPPER

MR. G. PAUL APPOINTED Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Mr. George Paul. junr.. of Auckland has been appointe handicapper for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trottin* Club. Mr. Paul has acted for some years as handicapper to the Auckland and other provincial clubs. A Promising Sort Harry Kinnimont put the straps or. Peter Lloyd (Peterwah—Mahinga) for the first time since his arrival from Gisborne one morning toward the end of the week, and the newcomer pleased the onlookers by his stylish action. His task was not an exacting one, but sufficient was seen to warrant the opinion that when properly tuned up Peter Lloyd will make things interesting for Auckland provincial novices.

In Good Shape Peter Grattan (I eter Moko—Golden Grattan), after being given a couple of rounds to warm him up, sailed away from the 12-furlong post, and, pacing without a flaw, wound up a useful teak in good style. He was splendidly handled by W. Nightingale, who has the big fellow in rare trim. The mile and a-half was traversed at a uniform clip for each half, and Peter finished with plenty cf determination. One of the most attractive track essays for the week was witnessed on Thursday, when Native Prince (J. Shaw), Jewel Pointer (G. Lardner), and Western King (C. Fairman) jumped off at the mile and a-half disk. The Prince, who wee unhoppled, was quickly in the van, and led Jewel Pointer by a length* or so to the half-mile flag, with the King three lengths back. When the mile post was reached Jewel was on terms with the unhoppled merchant, Western King still at the rear. The final half saw the trio under a hard drive, the pace being clapped on a treat, and in the dash to the box Western King got up to his stabiemates, the three finishing in line. Derby Candidate Coming Right Trustworthy (Worthy Bond — Connie) and Betty Moko (Peter Moko —Papa* tina) were associated in a bout over » mile and a-quarter. Betty led tne Derby candidate at a sound baterver the first half of the journey, but worthy reduced the gap, and a furlonß from the finish was keeping in stno with her more experienced companion. Sam Roe held the ribbons three-year-old, and gave her a reauy useful workout. The filly is. COB JJS back to form, and may be at her d®*: to tackle the Southern cracks nexi month. .
