MAKING NEW COAL PORT

ONERAHI IMPROVEMENTS HARBOUR BOARD AND RAILWAY NEGOTIATIONS (From Our Oivn Correspondent) WHANGAREI, Friday. Onerahi is likely to have improved coaling facilities if the proposals of the Minister of Railways, the Right Hon. J. G. Coates, are adopted. In a letter to the Whangarei Harbour Board, the Minister made the following suggestions: (1) The Harbour Board to forthwith take over the wharf they have agreed to buy, and pay over the purchase money. (2) The Railway Department to perform the shunting work at the Onerahi wharf, as at present. (3) The Railway Department to allow the present cranes to remain on the wharf, if desired, until the wharf is removed. (4) The Harbour Board to provide any new cranes required, and to arrange for any alterations necessary to the wharf structure and sidings thereon to accommodate any such new cranes. (5) The Harbour Board to take over the entire working oi the cranes. (6) The Railway Department to providet 100 new Q wagons. O The special rate of 3s lOd a ton for bunker coal and other coal for shipment to ports other than Auckland passing ov the Onerahi wharf to be increased to 4d a ton. The board decided to write to the Minister expressing its appreciation on the manner in which the general manager of railways had dealt with the matters raised by the deputation trom the board.
