Young Producer will Film “Quickies” Throughout N.Z.

Popular New Picture Novelty

“Quickies,” the latest motion picture novelty, are to be filmed in practically every New Zealand centre by Mr. Rudall Hayward, the young Auckland producer who recently completed “The Bush Cinderella.” After a visit to Wellington, and a tour through various towns in the South, Mr. Hayward is back at his studio, where he is also working on the script of a new Dominion-made film that he hopes will be suitable for the British quota, and good enough for overseas release. “Quickies” are story subjects averaging 2,000 feet in length, which are made' quickly and cheaply, one in each town, with local amateur artists. They are designed for screening only in districts where the people concerned are known, but the scheme is said to be both a popular and profitable one.

Mr. Hayward has already made two “Quickies” —one in Hamilton, entitled “Hamilton Husbands,” and the othqr in Wanganui, entitled “Winifred of Wanganui.’ ’ Arrangements have been entered into with theatres throughout

the country, and soon “Quickies” will be known everywhere. Referring to his appearance before the Film Commission in Wellington, Mr. Hayward said that the evidence presented by him included a reference to the fact that at present the indus try in New Zealand i 3 badly in need of support. He suggested that if a prize were offered, of say £I,OOO, it would provide incentive for production on more ambitious lines. Sir John Luke asked if the talent available in New Zealand warranted the encouragement of Dominion productions, and was told that in propor tion to the population New Zealand possessed as much potent 5 -’ talent as any country. Mr. Hayward also secured an assurance from the Prime Minister that the assistance and encouragement given recently to an American company in New Zealand would be given also to New Zealanders. Moreover, he was informed that the new Government studio at Miramar would be available to him for motion picture work.
