Arawa Souvenirs

AIRMEN IN ROTORUA No Flight Over Auckland SOUTHERN CROSS LEAV ES SOCKBURN ON FRIDAY (Special to ■THE SUN) ROTORUA, To-day. THE Tasman flyers are thoroughly enjoying their visit to the thermal regions. The novelty of the Arawa native entertainment appealed to them very much. They were each presented last evenings with carved pipes and tikis as souvenirs. To-day they visit Whakarewarewa and Wairakei. The following provisional programme has been arranged:—

Return to Auckland on Saturday and attend the citizens’ ball in the tfown Hall; leave the Grand Hotel on Sunday at 11 a.m. for the airdrome at Ihumata, taking off about 12.30 p.m. for Hawera. Owing to the fact that the fuel capacity of the Bristol machine is only sufficient for 21 hours’ flying, Captain J. L. Findlay considers it. inadvisable to attempt to circle over Auckland city before heading south. In the event of head winds, he says, it might involve a forced landing on the way to Hawera, where the machines are to refuel. The flyers expect to reach Hawera about 3 p.m., and Westmere, five miles out of Wanganui, at 4.30. They will stay the night at Foster’s Hotel, Wanganui.

Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith and Flight-Lieutenant Ulm are not accepting any engagements on Sunday night or Monday morning, as they feel the need of a rest. They expect to take off at 9.30 a.m. for Blenheim, arriving at noon to refuel, and hope to reach Sockburn at 3.30 on Monday. On Tuesday they will leave for Dunedin, stopping at Papakaio. They will stay at the Grand Hotel, Dunedin, on Tuesday night, returning to Sockburn on Wednesday, 26th, making a stop at Washdyke for fuel. The departure of the Southern Cross from Sockburn has been tentatively fixed for 2 o’clock on Friday, September 28, but, of course, their adherence to this programme depends on favourable weather conditions.
