WILL SUPPORT BILL
ROSKILL AND MUSEUM MR. VAILE’S “SORRY JOKE” The Mount Roskill Road Board decided last evening to withdraw its opposition to the Auckland • War Memorial Museum Bill. In response to a request by the Mount Roskill. Road Board, the Auckland War Memorial authorities forwarded a detailed list of the salaries proposed to be paid to the Museum officials. The statement comprised the following items: Director and secretary, £800; four curators at £4OO each; junior assistant, £200; five other officers, £1,150, and six janitors, £1,458, making a total yearly payment of £5,208. Mr. G. E. Tansley, acting-chairman, said that the question of paying Mr. H. E. Vaile £I,OOO a year having been cleared up, the board could now support the Bill. - “Mr. Vaile brought a hornet's nest about his ears by saying that he was to receive £I,OOO a year,” said Mr. Tansley. “It was a sorry joke.” Mr. E. W. Foote: I cannot imagine such an extraordinary thing as a joke and Mr. Vaile being connected. It was agreed to withdraw opposition to the measure, and to advise the acting member for the district to support the Bill in the House.
