“IOLANTHE” STAGED
GRAMMAR GIRLS’ SUCCESS EXCELLENT COSTUMES The rich humour of Gilbert and the distinctive music- of Sir Arthur Sullivan were well interpreted by pupils of the Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, who staged “lolanthe” at the Town Hall last evening. There was a crowded audience. Individual singing was especially pleasing, and particular attention had been paid to the costumes for the performance. As the Lord Chancellor, Miss Joan Walker played cleverly, and others who had important parts were Miss Jean Alison (Strephon), Miss Sybil Phillips (Phyllis) and Miss Jean Menzies (Queen of the Fairies). As lolanthe, Miss Judith Glover impressed the audience. The Misses K. R. L. Gurr, Patricia McCallum and Betty Atkinson played well as Celia, Leila and Fleta, and the Misses Barbara Robertson and Edith Hawkins were unusually bright earls. There were two large choruses. Mrs. .Sutherland, assisted by Mrs. Heap and Miss L. Mills, was the producer, and Mrs. J. R. Strange was accompanist.
