BOUNDARY ROADS
ROSKILL BOARD’S PROBLEM CONFERENCE WITH CITY The question of the reconstruction of the boundary roads separating the Mount Roskill Road District from the city was again brought under the notice of the road board at its meeting last evening. The "Works Committee recommended that as the Minister of Internal Affairs had declined to allow the board to borrow £ 3,000 for this work, the maiw. tenance allocation for The Drive, Selwyn, St. Andrew’s and Landscape Roads be increased to £BSO for the current year, and that the city be asked to contribute a similar amount. Mr. G. E. Tansley, who presided, in the absence of Mr. E. F. Jones through indisposition, said that £BSO was inadequate and w r ould only be wasted. He urged that an allocation of £1,259 be made and the whole amount be expended on The Drive, w*hich was a main thoroughfare. The other roads could be attended to next year. Messrs, E. F. Jones, E. A. Pearce, S. L Goodall and G. Davies were appointed to confer further with the City Council and report at the next meeting. The Finance Committee suggested that the board should establish a sinking fund to be applied to the purchase of a destructor for the district when a sufficient sum has accumulated. The Public Works Department intimated that the Main Highways Board has under consideration the amount of the subsidy it will grant toward concreting Mount Albert Road, which has been declared a main highway. A proposal was made by the Wesley Trustees to subdivide a small portion of its Three Kings estate in' return for the payment by the board of £3,000 for draining its property. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs. E. F. Jones, G. E. Tansley and E. A. Pearce was authorised
to confer further with the Wesley Trustees. With a view to augmenting the water supply for fire-fighting purposes, it waa agreed to seek the permission of the Auckland City Council to connect with its six-inch main in The Drive, and with the Mount Eden Borough Council to join up with its six-inch main in Three Kings Road, and to turn on the stop valves should a fire occur.
During the past fortnight permits were granted for the erection of, or alteration to. 13 buildings, to the value of £6,842. Retrenchment in the outside staff has been carried out, effecting a saving of £32 a week. Accounts amounting to £3,146 were passed for payment. The general account is 6,167 in debit;
