Avondale Club Makes a Start on Saturday
The Latest Gossip from the Tracks

Similar Mishaps While Caterpillar and Shipshape were galloping on the trial grass at Riccarton on Saturday, the latter collided with a trestle and threw his rider J. A. Cox, who suffered a sprained ankle. Strangely enough, a similar mishap occurred at Hastings. J. Hockley, trainer of Epistle, Dreamy and Co., was unfortunate enough to strike his foot on a trestle when riding Plimmerton in a gallop. During his disablement A. G. Dixon is superintending the above team.
Lesson In Nomenclature A Chinese has named his recentlyarrived youngster “Kingsford Smith.” Asked the reason, John blandly replied: “Allee samee Chinee man—One Long Hop!”
An Amateur Critic “On Saturday Te Atiawa, carrying 231 b above the minimum, was beaten out of a place in a hack event. Nevertheless the Avondale handicapper has seen fit to raise him to 5.12 or 121 b above the minimum, in an open event. It will come as no surprise if the Chief Ruler three-year-old should decline his engagement.” The Taranaki writer responsible for this has entirely overlooked the fact that Te Atiawa was only penalised in the Members’ Handicap, which is a second-rate sprint when all is said and done.
Speedy From the Tapes The older horses provided an interesting bout when they were given barrier-practice at Ellerslie yesterday morning. Eight took part, these being Bulolo, Monetize, Myola, Lineroo, Town Teller, Freyja, Valquette, and the older gelding Huephano, and with the exception of the last named, who dwelt, the field began smartly, with Bulolo to the fore. He was never headed and had a' slight advantage over Town Teller at the finish, with Huephano and Palquette next.
