FOR THE SICK POOR

In its first year the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary has raised the ‘ sum of £2,074 1s 3d, and it has a. 1 credit balance of £957 18s Bd. This 1 balance will allow the auxiliary to spend £BO a month, sufficient for groceries, meat, milk, and bread ‘ during the present year. The first annual meeting of the auxiliary was held yesterday afternoon in the Lyceum Club, the patroness, Mrs. A.‘ D. Campbell (the Mayoress). presiding. The president, Mrs. E. A. Kidd, and chairman of the Hospital Board, Mr. William Wallace, were at the table. The Mayoress said that any- doubts about the necessity of the auxiliary had been dispersed by its service through a winter ct great trial to the sick poor. It had done excellent work. The annual report stated that the idea. of the auxiliary had been conceived by Mrs. David Nathan and Mrs. Alfred Kidd. During the early part of 1928 the work of the auxiliary increased rapidly, and it was decided to focus the attention of the public on the needs of the auxiliary by means of public lectures, entertainments, and finally a street collection day, which was held on June 1, when £1,085 was realised. Of this £BO4 was collected in boxes, £l6l 115 9d realised from a bridge party and dance at the Click Clack Cabaret. Three new branches were formed at Newrnarket, Mount Eden and Onehunga. All the branches and committees had done excellent work. “The record of the first year's work proves the need of this organisation," said Mrs. Kidd. A. vote of thanks to the president was carried by acclamation. Mr. Wallace said he was proud of the work done by the auxiliary, which had given service at a time when the hospital was badly overcrowded and m need of help. Dr. Hilda Northcroft also spoke in praise of the services of the organisation, saying that it kept alive the human side of hospital work. Officers were elected as follow:--Pat-roness, the Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell; president, Mrs. E. A. Kidd; hon. secretary, Dr. Buckley Turklngton; hon. treasurer, Mrs. H. Kirk (all reelected); non-official members, Mrs. David Nathan, Mrs. W. H. Parkcs, Mrs. G. H. Wilson, Mrs. Drysdale, Mrs. Bruce Mackenzie and Dr. Hilda Northcroft.
