POLICE OFFICER HONOURED

R.SERGEANT ROCK PRESENTATION AT NEWMARKET A large number of business men and police officials assembled at Newmarket yesterday. when a. presentation was made by the citizens to Sergeant J. Rock. who has retired from the police force. after many years of service. nearly 20 years of which have began spgnt_ in that district.

Commissioner W. B. Mcllveney said Sergeant Rook was one of the most honourable men in the New Zealand Police Force, and had capably discharged the duties of traffic director. He was sympathetic and just. The Deputy-Mayor, Mr. G. E. Sraerdon, said Sergeant Rock’s example had imbued the men under him with a kindly and tolerant spirit. He thought that the freedom from cases of robbery and assault in Newmarket was due to the efficiency of the police. Superintendent Wohlmann, Inspector J. Mcllveney and Inspector Hollis also paid tributes to the popularity and efficiency of Sergeant Rock.

On behalf of the citizens of Newmarket, the Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, presented Mrs. Rock with a flower and fruit epergne, silver tray and teaset, and Sergeant Rock with a purse containing a sum of money. - My work has been prosaic,” said the sergeant. ‘‘The absence of crime in eewmarket reflected credit on the law-abiding citizens and the zeal of the station staff.”

1 o his colleague the sergeant gave ms warmest thanks. The courtesy, advice and assistance of his superiors, rom the Commissioner downwards had made his task easy. He thanked the speakers for appreciative reference to his success as a rose-grower, saying that a policeman must have a hobby. He also thanked the Mayor for the compliments paid to Mrs. Rock.
