GANGER’S NEGLECT LEADS TO DEATH COMMENTS AT INQUEST Press Association PALMERSTON N., To-day. An inquest into the death of William Sherlock, a railway ganger, of Tokomaru, who was struck by the Main Trunk express on the afternoon of September 7, was held this morning. The driver of the train, Peter Salter, said that deceased was noticed # on his velocipede when 150 yards away. The train was then travelling at from 45 to 50 miles an hour. He blew the whistle and applied the emergency brake. A head wind was blowing the smoke back into the cab, obscuring his vision. Deceased got off and was apparently trying to get the velocipede off the line when the train struck him. Other evidence was given showing that deceased said that when he was trying to get the jigger off the line his foot stuck in the handle. The coroner, in his verdict, stated that from the evidence it . would seem the onus was on the ganger not to be on the line when a train was approaching. A verdict of death in accordance with the medical evidence was returned.
