CARRIAGES DERAILED
MISHAP AT TAURAROA WHANGAREI-AUCKLAND EXPRESS Two carriages were derailed when the Whangarei-Auckland express, due in Auckland at 6.12 o’clock last evening, struck a rail alongside the line near Tauraroa late yesterday afternoon. No damage was done and no one was injured. The train was delayed for half an hour while the passengers were transferred from the derailed carriages and the train linked up again. The fifth and sixth carriages were thrown off the line and dragged for some distance, but very little damage was done to the permanent way as the jolting of the derailed carriages attracted the attention of the driver. Luggage was thrown off the racks, but except for a slight bumping no one was disturbed. PASSENGER’S STATEMENT _ Members of the Druids’ Executive were returning from a visit to Whangarei and Dargaville by the train. “A succession of bumps and a swaving of our carriage made us think the axle had broken,” said one of the party, Mr. ft. H. Lethaby. “The carriage seemed about to topple over, and then we struck the points and the carriage righted itself.” When they alighted they found the axle had been broken right off one side of their carriage.
