TEACHER-POLITICIAN
WANTS FORTNIGHT OFF ‘TAKE TWO MONTHS,” SAYS BOARD “Shouldn’t he resign?” “Give him three months.” “How will the children get on?” The question of what was to be done with a schoolmaster who applied for two weeks’ leave to contest a seat at general election rather baffled the Education Board to-day. Mr. O. E. Burton, of Whangarata School made the application. “Well, we have granted leave in the past,” said the chairman, Mr. A. Burns. “It seems to me that he needs more than a fortnight oft to contest the election.” Mr. E. C. Banks: Two months without salary he needs. He will be running into town every night, and be half asleep all day. Mr. R. Hoe: Three months, I think. “If he thinks he can do it in two weeks why give him more?” asked Mr. H. S. W. King. The chairman; Will he do justice to the children? It is our job to see he does. Mr. King: I was thinking of the election. The board decided to refuse a fortnight’s leave but to offer two months without pay.
