Car Somersaults At High Speed

ONE MAN KILLED SMASH NEAR TIMARU (Special to THE SUN) TIMARU, To-day. One young man was killed, one lost half an ear and suffered a shoulder dislocation, and three experienced a miraculous escape from death when a five-seater car somersaulted and crashed into a culvert ,t a sharp corner some five miles north of Waimate, shortly after five o’clock last evening. The victim of the smash, who was driving, was Mr. 1,. Rodgers, of Invercargill. and the injured man, Mr. D. O'Shaughnessy, a native of Ireland. The other passengers in the car were Messrs. M. Wakelin, Littlebourne Road, Dunedin; J. Markwell, Singleton. Mew South Wales; and S. Beard, Great North Road. Grey Lynn. A few minutes before, the car had passed a passenger bus at a very high rate of speed. The party represented the Wellington firm of Ray Studios, and *as on its way to Oamaru. Sister Genge, of Waimate, and Bishop West Watson, of Christchurch, were on the bus and attended to the dying man and his injured companion.
