WORK FOR WAIHI UNEMPLOYED The Mayor of Wuihi, Mr. W. "Wallnut, received advice to-day from the Minister of Public Works to the effect that 28 of the 40 unemployed men in Waihi will be placed on relief work Immediately, on the Whangamata Road, the Waitawheta Road and the Nea.vsville-Puriri Road. Mr. Wallnut regrets that the Waihi men could not have been placed on the reconstruction work on the WaihiPaeroa main road, contending that the hundreds of pounds contributed annually by Waihi toward maintenance of the road entitles the town to some consideration. MANUREWA TOWN BOARD The Manurewa Town Board last evening received advice from the Main Highways Board granting a £ 3 to £ 1 subsidy on the cost of the approaches to the overhead bridge and the Takanini Bridge on the Great South Road. The clerk’s action in declining to provide a polling booth at Homai, on the occasion of the lato application by the Ratepayers’ Association was approved. SOUTHERN CROSS POSTPONED. — The departure of the Melanesian steamer Southern Cross for the mission stations in the South-west Pacific has been further postponed until noon on Thursday. She is loading at Queen’s Wharf. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE— The following vessels are expected to be within range of the undermentioned wireless stations to-night:— Auckland. Tofua, Maui Pomare, Remuera, Devon, Port Hunter, Scalaria. Kintyre, Spinanger, Port Napier, Wairuna, Antonio, Hatkhola. Chatham Islands.—lonic, Turakina. Wellington. Maori, Wahine, Ngaio, Arahura, Tamahine, Kaiwarra, Gallic, Pakeha, Kartigi, Canadian Transporter. Awarua. —Makura, Maunganui, Manuka, Cambridge, City of Batavia, Kaitangata. Waikouaiti. PORT OF ONEHUNGA—arrivaLs yesterday RARAWA (10 a.m.), 1,077 tons, Bark, from Raglan and Kawhia. DEPARTURE TO-DAY RARAWA (1 Ca.m.), 1,077 tons, Bark, for New Plymouth. The Rarawa could not cross the Manukau Bar yesterday on account of the rough seas running. She cleared port at 10 o’clock this morning, however, for New Plymouth, and is due back at half-past seven on Thursday morning. The Kaitoa leaves Nelson to-morrow for Onehunga, and is due there on Friday to lift a special cargo for Nelson. The Of-epuki is due at Onehunga on Monday next to load for Nelson and West Coast ports. The Arapawa sails from Onehunga at 4 o’clock this afternoon for Raglan, KaWhia and Port Waikato. The Hauturu is not now due at Onehunga from Raglan, Kawhia and Port Waikato till to-morrow morning.

PAPATOETOE RATEPAYERS BOARD ASKED FOR FREE SHOW Several sharp passages-at-arms occurred at the annual meeting of the Papatoetoe ratepayers last evening, the principal contestants being Mr. A. \V. Hall, chairman of the retiring hoard, and Mr. J. Browne, president of the Papatoetoe Ratepayers' Welfare League. The chairman gave a comprehensive summary of the activities of the board during the past two yea us, and Mr. W. J. Nicholson read the balance sheet. In reply to a question as to the cost of the town-planning map of the district, the chairman said it was £SOO. Mr. Browne pointed out that no mention had been made of the amount of the water loan, and asked if the hoard was frightened “to stagger humanityl." The chairman said that £40,000 had been sanctioned by the Local Bodies Loans Board, but they considered that £ 20,000 would be sufficient for the first two years. Mr. Browne asked that the particulars of the proposed water loan be given, such as the cost of pumping plant, reticulation pipes, reservoir and water tower. Tho Chairman: We have not got the items here to-night; it Is the engineer's job to supply them, not the chairman. Mr. E. S. Sorensen, chairman of the Works Committee, gave a resume of the principal works carried out during the board's term of office. On the motion of Mr. Carr, it was unanimously decided that it. be a recommendation to the incoming hoard that they hold a ratepayers' meeting every six months as a free public entertainment. The retiring board was accorded a heartv vote of thanks for the manner in which it had looked after the interests of the district. KING COUNTRY NEWS The Taumarunui County Council resolved at its last meeting to restrict the size of timber loads on the roads in the Waimiha district, owing to the excessive damage to the surfaces. The engineer was instructed to prepare plans for a much-needed bridge over the Taringamotu Stream on the Tau* marunui-Taupo Road. It is expected that the annual sports to be held by the Ruapehu Ski Club at the National Park next week will this year provide a number of new attractions, including a few days spent at the Mangatepopo hut, from which day trips can be made to Mounts Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. The party this year will include half a dozen from Auckland, twelve from Wanganui, several from Taumarunui, and one from Ashburton. The stay at the park will last ten days, from September 20 to October 1. * * * With Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., as chairman, an Assessment Court, consisting of Messrs. C. J. Potts, J. Slattery, H. Street and J. Roche (assessors), sat at the Taumarunui Courthouse to deal with a large number of objections to valuations made in the districts concerned. The Valuation Department was represented by Mr. A. B. Jordan. One case was struck out, ono valuation was upheld, and in all others dealt with reductions were allowed. * * * The Taumarunui Hospital Board has decided to extend the agreement with the local Friendly Societies’ Association, in regard to hospital fees and treatment, till March 31, 1929, when ft will be again reviewed. w * * * The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Ongarue Tennis Club: Patron, Mr. J. C. Rolleston, M.P.; president, Mr. D. J. Gardiner; vice-presidents, Messrs. A. H.' Delaney, J. Mearns, J. Coogan, R. Simmons, W. Flintoff; secretary and treasurer, Mr. C. Eckhold; committee chairman, Mr. T. Taylor: committee, Mesdames Hosking, Prussing, Smith, Eckhold, Miss J. McKee, and Messrs. Hosking, Prussing, Zander, G. McKee, «md G. Miller; club captain, Mr. J. Jones: selection committee, Messrs. J. Jones, C. Eckhold and N. A. Prussing.
