RURAL EDUCATION
SCHEME FOR ADULTS UNIVERSITY PROPOSAL There is a possibility of a scheme for rural adult education being introduced if certain funds tentatively offered to the New Zealand University become available. An outline of the scheme thut might be introduced was submitted to the Auckland University College Council yesterday in a series of recommend. - tions fvom the professorial board. These were based on the scheme proposed by Professor J. Shelley, of Canterbury College. The scheme involved the appointment of an additional tutor whose duties would bo to visit small rural centres on a regular time-table, give lectures, and to organise the distribution of boxes containing lecture-not« -. books, and other material for study groups. Provision is also made for . • motor-van to carry study material and a central library. It was further proposed that annual winter schools of two or thi •• weeks’ duration be organised for ih«* benefit of younger members of the farming community. if the schools were held near Auckland the staffs of the university, W.J2.A. and Training College could co-operate. The scheme provided further for the appointment of a research worker in rural economics and sociology for three or four years, with one year's preliminary study abroad. The estimated annual cost of the scheme was £1.130. with an additional £750 for research. A capital expenditure of £740 would be required.
The report will be forwarded to th registrar of the New Zealand Univer sity.
