CHANGE OF JUDGES

MR. JUSTICE SMITH FOR AUCKLAND Mr. Justice Heed, who has presided at the July sessions of th£ Supreme Court, will leave for Wellington on Friday evening to take his gteat on the Court of Appeal. The Bench at Auckland will be occupied by the newly-appointed judge, Mr. Justice Smith, of Wellington, who will arrive on September 29. He will remain in Auckland for hbout a month. There is still no definite advice as to when the Chief J u s ti c e, Sir Charles Skerrett, who underwent a serious . operation some months ago, will return to the Bench. In the meantime Mr. Justice Reed is virtually acting-Chief Justice, being next in seniority of the judges now in New Zealand. Ordinarily Mr. Justice Herdman would hold the acting-Chief Justiceship by virtue of seniority. He is now, however, visiting Great Britain. He is expected to return in February.
