HOARIRI’S SPRINT ELLERSLIE’S BEST TO-DAY RESTAURANT UNDER A CLOUD Hoariri took the honours at Ellerslio this morning, when he sprinted six furlongs in the attractive time of 1.20 1-5. It was a sparkling effort, and instances how well the Antagonist horse is to meet his Avondale engagements. Hoariri was accompanied by Master Boon, who allowed his companion to secure a break, but the pair were racing on terms when they turned for home, having taken 25 3-5 for the initial two furlongs. Hoarici finished very strongly a couple of lengths in advance of Master Doom who took too much out of himself in the early stages. Hoariri has been executing his work in great style these last few days, and everything points to him having a particularly good chance of accounting for the sprint events at Avondale. Conditions were pleasant for training operations at Ellerslie this morning, and notwithstanding that the track in use. No. 1 grass, was soft, some very creditable times were registered Little inferior to Hoariri’s gallop was that accomplished by Golden Wedding and Sleepy Sol. who beat Restaurant over seven furlongs in 1.34 1-5. the first three in 38 2-5. Sleepy Sol had the outside running, and as he finished on terms with Golden Wedding, most •redit is due to him. for obviously he covered a deal of extra ground. Nevertheless Golden Wedding acquitted herself well, and the manner in which she has been getting through her work indicates that she will take a power of beating in her engagements at Avondale on Saturday. Gone Lame Subsequently it was learned that Restaurant’s poor showing was due to a tenderness in the near foreleg and off hind leg, the mare having shown slight signs of being lame on Saturday morning last. Unless she makes a quick recovery, it is probable that Restaurant will have to forego her engagements at Avondale, a meeting at which her prospects appeared verybright. For a maiden perfumer. Huepham put up a fair gallop when he ran home from the six furlong post in 1.21. Blue Spear continues to gallop pleasingly, and he has recorded some smart times in his tasks. This morning he and The Fox were partnered over six furlongs, and they travelled over that distance in 1.20 2-5. Still a maiden. Blue Spear showed plenty of dash to finish on terms with The Fox, and it will occasion no surprise to see him wind up the actual favourite in the second division of the Maiden Plate at Avondale on Saturday.

Llewellyn (E. Garrett) and Fair Abbey (G. Holland) jumped four of the schooling hurdles, fencing safely. Paketahi (H. Dulieu), Harbour View (R. Olive) and Template gave only a fair display over four schooling hurdles. Yum Yum (P. Chrystal) fenced nicely over the stand double, baulked at the stone wall, eventually jumped it, and was then taken to the sod wall at the top of the course and subsequently gave a fair exhibition over the steeplechase fences again on the flat. The following were the gallops clocked this morning: Three Furlongs Monetize, 38 3-5, and Lido and Wye, 40. Half-mile King Emerald and Gold Money, 52 1- Parfait Amour, 52 1-5 (last four of five furlongs); Taneriri, Myola, and Lineroo, 53. Five Furltongs Sir Russell and Sulla, 1.8 4-5. Six Furlongs Hoariri and Master Doon, 1.20 1-5; Blue Spear and The Fox, 1.20 2-5; Huephano, 1.21; Good Boy, 1.21 1-5; Bombarder and Pompeius, 1.21 3-5; Segment, 1.22; Lomint and *Welkne, 1.22 2- Eager Rose, Winsome Boy, and Judge’s Box, 1.23: TL r de Park, 1.23: Gay Cockade, 1.25; Red Lion, 1.25 2-5; Mountain Guide and Kyoto, 1.25 4-5; Miss Alma and Kaiwanga, 1.26 1-5; and Fair Abbey, 1.29 3-5. Seven Furlongs Golden Wedding, Sleepy Sol, and Restaurant, 1.34 1-5; Modest Boy and Golden Krist, 1.35; Corinax and The Lover, 1.37 1-5. Mile Marble Mount and Master Clements, 1.53 2-5. A Round Beau Cavalier, 1.59 2-5; Pekatahi and Harbour View, 2.7; Potoanui, Importer, and Glenotus, 2.7 1-5; and Bizarro, 2.10. AT AVONDALE Star Stranger, looking in great order, was given a couple of rounds at a good solid pace, sprinting up the straight and running the last furlong smartly in 13. It is understood that A. Tinker will ride the Martian gelding at the Auckland Spring Meeting, but so far no rider has been definitely engaged for the Avondale Cup. The course proper was thrown open for fast Work at Avondale, the flags being about 70ft. out. The going was soft in the outer, but near the rails is in great order for Saturday. TomorrQW morning the new grass track, on the inside, will be thrown open for fast work. Maori Boy, who showed some pace at the last Avondale meeting, was noticed doing excellent work without being extended, and he should V e a good performer this season. Two that cut out a nice three furlongs along the back were Branson and Auriculus, who cut this journey out in 39 2-5. Mauriaena, a stable companion of the latter, was noticed moving freely after her Wanganui efforts, for which she is none the worse. Eh Timi was altogether too good for Section and the two-year-old Golden Measure at the end of half a mile in 55 2-5, and judging from the manner in which they moved, Serang and Nassock have improved since last seen out. The following gallops were timed: Three Furlongs Branson and Auriculus (along the back), 39 2-5. Four Furlongs Maori Boy and the mare by Catmint —Roulade 55, Tidal (long work, picked up at half-mile by Princess Rain and Cynthia N.) 55, Eh Timi, Section and Golden Measure 55 2-5, Ballymoy II and Princess Electra 56^. Others to do pace work were Envoy, Principal. Owairaka, Fancy Boy, Alonsoa, Partial Eclipse, Grand Tea, Mussie and Camp Prince. The following visitors put in an appearance at Avondale this morning: Royal Mint, First Money, Mask, Ceremony, Alloy, Lysander, Episode, Pedestal, Imperial Guard, Staghunter, Clever, The Hawk, Goshawk, Nukumai, Lucy Rose and Upoko. LUGGED IN AGAIN LIMERICK’S BORING TACTICS (United P.A . — By Telegraph — Copyright) Reed. 9.40 a.m. SYDNEY, To-day. The majority of sporting writers here are agitating for a reopening of the McCarten case. They contend that Saturday’s race in which Limerick par-

ticipated demonstrated more clearly than ever Limerick’s weakness for lugging in. Owing to McCarten’s suspension, G. Price has now secured new riders for Reonui and Jocelyn in A.J.C. and Epsom and Metropolitan handicap engagements respectively—Adams for the former, and probably Duncan for the latter.
