PAST VERSUS PRESENT
GAMES AT GRAMMAR SCHOOL OLD BOYS’ DAY CELEBRATED Chief among the events of the first I Old Boys’ Day, held at the Auckland j Grammar School on Saturday, was the j | football match “Past v. Present.” Old boys, present boys, and friends were welcomed by the headmaster, Mr. ; H. J. D. Mahon. Next year, he said, | it was hoped to celebrate the diamond | jubilee in a fitting manner. He was [ pleased to welcome three of the original J Old Boys, Captain H. Duder, Mr. R. J. j Carbines and Mr. W. Wallace Kidd, I who were at the old school of 1868. After the singing of the school song, i Mr. A. St. Clair Brown, president of j the Old Boys’ Association, explained | the reasons Sir James Parr, Sir James Gunson and other old boys bad not been picked to play in the football match. The Mayor of Auckland and the Mayor of Mount Eden, he said, wanted to play on opposite sides. The school orchestra, choir and dramatic club entertained with song, music and Dickens’s sketches. After that there was an exhibition of gymnastics and boxing in the gymnasium. The main event was the football match, “Past v. Present.” Old boys turned out their senior back team, but the forwards were all married men. estimated to have nearly 30 children among them. The teams were: School.—McFarland, Cameron, Stuart, Campbell, Haddrell, Newton, Frankham (captain), Emanuel, McKearny, Cleghorn, . Robinson, Sanft Cooke, Mulgan and Mason. Old Boys.—A. Singleton, Williams, Olsen, Gardner, Tapper, E. Singleton, D. Wright, Anderson, Hamilton, King, Arnold, H. Wilson, Belcher, Preston, Conyngham. The game was merry and full of incident. Old Boys’ forwards showed signs of stress before the final whistle went. Old Boys led most of the way, but only by one point up to the last few minutes. The final score was: Old Boys 25 School 21 For the winners tries were scored by Wright, Gardner, E. Singleton and Preston. A Singleton converted three tries and kicked a penalty. E. Singleton dropped a field goal. For School, tries were scored by Newton (2), Cooke, Stuart. Newton converted two , and Cleghorn converted one and kicked a penalty.
