POINT-TO-POINT STEEPLES
Keen interest was displayed by the large number of spectators at the Pakuranga Hunt point-to-point steeples held on Mr. F. A. Price’s estate, Ranganui, Papatoetoe, on Saturday afternoon. Ideal weather prevailed for the meeting. The farmers over whose properties the hunts are held were invited to be present. The principal event of the day, the Members’ Heavy-weight Race, of about three miles, minimum weight, 12.7, was won by Mr. Thos. Hoult’s Aotearoa (A. G. Kendall), which carries with it the Captain Jack Cup, donated by Mr. J. H. Dalton, and held last year by Mr. Chris Allen. The officials responsible for the successful running of the function were: Master, Mr. H. Bullock-Webster; committee, Messrs. J. Adams, B. H. Bishop, J. Buchanan, W. S. Dalton, W. T. Duder, W. W. McLaughlin, B. M. Meyers, F. A. Price, A. G. Quartley, E. j. Roe, W. J. D. Sharp, Dr. A. M. Grant, deputy-master: Judicial Committee, Messrs. H. Bullock-Webster. W. S. Dalton, W. T. Duder, F. A. Price, E. J. Rae: judges, Messrs. J. H. Dalton, JV. J. Sharp; starter, Mr. E. J. Rae; call stewards, Messrs. J. Adams, B. M. Meyers: weighing stewards, Messrs. B. H. Bishop, J. Buchanan: clerk of course, Mr. P. H. Smith, huntsman; secrehirv and treasurer, Mr. Robt. D. Neal. MEMBERS’ LIGHT-WEIGHT RACE About 3 miles. MANGAITU (Mr. A. M. Wilson’s), rider F. H. Baker j PADDY (Miss E. Lloyd’s), rider Mr. W. B. Lloyd -2 TE KOREA (Mr. 11. Rothery’s), rider E. Ward 3 From a good start the field kept well together, with All Black leading till the last quarter of a mile, when It followed the wrong course, and left Paddy leading by a couple of lengths. With a spirited finish Mangaitu challenged, and took charge a couple of lengths from the post. MEMBERS’ HEAVY-WEIGHT AOTEA-ROA (Mr. Thomas Hoult’s), About 3 miles. rider A. G. Kendall i SALVABOY (Mr. C. Allen’s), rider L. Prangley LONGREIN (Mr. W. B. Lloyd’s), rider owner 3 Salvaboy held the lead till the last jump, when Aotea-roa, who had filled second place for the full distance, took charge and won by two lengths. FARMERS’ RACE About 3 miles AMMAN (C. Allan), L. Prangley .... 1 THELMA, owner .. .. 2 KAIAU (H. Swaffield), F. H. Baker.. 3 Hauturu led for the first eight fences, when his place was taken by Thelma, with Amman following close up. At the last jump both horses rose together, Amman gaining an advantage at the straight, to win by a couple of lengths. Sol lost his rider after the first mile had been travelled. INVITATION RACE About 3 miles. TE HOREA (Mr. H. Rothery’s), E. W ood 1 STONEWALL (Mr. A. G. Kendaii’s)’, Owner 2 HYPOTHESIS (Mr. F. H. Baker’s), Owner 3 Te Horea took the lead early in the race and maintained it to win by a distance. LADIES’ RACE About 2 miles PADDY (Miss E. Lloyd) owner .... 1 VIXEN (Miss D. Martin) owner .... 2 MOLLY <.Mrs. P. H. Smith) owner .. 3 Lady Chester led the field for half the distance when Paddy, by good horsemanship on the part of Miss Lloyd, gained a good advantage and held the lead to win by about four lengths. Vixen and Molly fought out a good finish for second place. OPEN POINT TO POINT About 3 miles AOTEROA (Thos. Holt) T. Peat) .... 1 HYPOTHESIS (F. H. Baker) owner .. 2 SALVABOY (C. Allen) L. Prangley 3 Salvaboy led three parts of the way when he was caught by Aotearoa and Hypothesis who led the field and finished in that order. At the conclusion of the meeting Mr. H. Bullock-Webster, Master of the Pakuranga Hunt, presented the successful owners with their trophies.
