ARRIVALS
Few Horses Appear at Headquarters BIG STRING DUE TO-MORROW Two members of J. W. Jefferd’s team in Star Stranger and the Avondale Stakes candidate. Hunting Day. arrived on Saturday, and were taken to Avondale. It is expected that another couple of horses from Jefferd’s establishment will put in an appearance to-morrow. White Fang, who is an acceptor for l the Flying Stakes at Avondale, and Tea Lady, his stable-companion, both under the charge of their trainer. H. Dunn, arrived by boat from Gisborne on Saturday, and are quartered at Kllerslie. The pair are to remain at headquarters for the next few weeks, their itinerary comprising the Avondale, Pakuranga and Auckland meetings. W. Rayner, private trainer for Mr. G. M. Currie, leaves Wanganui this week for Auckland with Mask, Episode, Lysander, and the two-year-olds. Ceremony and Alloy. F. Tilley leaves Fordell to-morrow with a team of three —Laughing Prince. High Falutin’ and Metellus. One or two others may come up later. The disqualification of E. A. Keesing for 12 months will mean that ownertrainer W. Scholium will have to secure the services of another rider for White Wings in the Avondale Guineas. No doubt the defeat of Episode in the Wanganui classic will cause the connections of White Wings to view more optimistically their prospects in the classic at Avondale. Reports credit White Wings with having done well in her preparation, and a little improvement on her performances last season will be necessary for the filly to attain to classic company. Riding Engagements Several riding engagements have been made for the Avondale meeting on Saturday. A few of these are: R. McTavish. —High Pitch, First Money, Grand Tea, Kerry Dance, Serang, Paganoßi (if started) and Kingsland, in the Avondale Guineas). S. Henderson. —Lomint, Quincoma and Valquette. L. Manson. —Blue Spear, Gold Money, Francolin, Thursby and Killute. O. Mclnally.—Royal Mint. Two Auckland jockels in R. McTavish and H. Wiggins will leave Auckland to-morrow night to be in attendance at the Manawatu Hunt Cluo’s meeting on Wednesday. McTavish is to • pilot Boy, and Wiggins will have the mounts on Vigilance, Tapestry and Lady Alophen. TE AROHA NOTES A LIKELY YOUNGSTER (Special to THE SUN> TE AROHA, Saturday. William of Orange, by Valkyrian— Lassie Doon, and therefore, a halfbrother to Master Doon and Luxurious, is shaping splendidly. In appearance he looks more like a three than a two-year-old. In his track efforts he is moving along very satisfactorily, and he bids fair to being one of the best equines bred in this district for some time. Te Koroke’s second to Partaga in the Seafield Handicap at Wanganui was his best effort for a considerable time, and properly paced the Humbug— Tigritiya gelding may add to his winning score. For some time Trainer J. H. Wallace has had him in really fine buckle, and this certainly assisted him in fighting out the finish as well as he did. After executing a good working gallop, Flying Tresses pulled up sore, the trouble being in the near fetlock. She has been returned to her owner at Waihou, and will be treated to a spell in the paddock. Mr. W. Dunn’s two-year-old filly by Lucullus—Starella met with an accident some time ago by coming into contact with a wire fence. The injured limb has since been treated and blistered, so there Is a chance of her yet gracing the racecourse. She is especially well grown, and on conformation should be a galloper of distinction. The purchase in England by Mr. J. Pohlen of the Spearmint horse Speardance should prove a fine acquisition to Matamata and adjoining districts, more especially as Day Comet is now in the South Island. The General Latour gelding, Indolent, is now putting more zest into his track work, and promises to make good this season. He is apparently going to be one of the lean kind, but may stay on well with age. The course of schooling over obstacles recently appears to have improved his racing condition. He is moving along on the tracks more convincingly than during the winter. He will probably be raced at the Pakuranga meeting a fortnight hence. When they left for Marton last week it was the intention of the local trainers to take their charges on to Auckland for the Avondale meeting after the Wanganui fixture. On present appearances it will not be surprising if at least half the number of horses are back here early next week. Valkon, Tea Time and Queen Areh were strongly in the market oiT Thursday, while there was practically no money for Te Koroke, who paid a good price. The failure of Te Time was a very costly one to backers. It would appear that Upoko is a much better track horse than he is with the colours up. Like so many of the Marble Arch strain he may become more solid with age.
The most forward of the local horses being away at Wanganui, track w r ork during the week has not been specially
interesting. On Thursday morning Indolent registered a good working gallop over a mile, and Marble King swung along nicely over a round on the plough. Glen Star and William of Orange indulged in short sprints twice, and Nancy Lee, with a good weight up, ran four furlongs in 52. Love Call was allotted threequarter pace-work, and Crown Arch registered a good working gallop over a mile. His condition is very solid, and he w T ill be ready to race at short notice. The well-known Taranaki performer The Lamb, is now at Matamata. He is not to be placed on the active list just now, but later on will probably again join the ranks of workers.
