MATCH AT DEVONPORT
SHORE BEATS MARATHON From the outset the Shore forwards showed a marked superiority, continually forcing the play well in Marathon’s territory. Despite Shore’s pressing methods, the Marathon defence withstood the onslaught until well into the second quarter, when Shore opened its account with an unconverted try. Marathon retaliated by carrying the game into Shore’s territory, and equalised a few minutes before half-time. On the resumption of play, the Shore men started a fierce attacking movement, and landed a converted try. From the kick-off Marathon made a great effort, and a penalty awarded against Shore was just missed by Stewart. Evenly contested mid-field play followed until the final whistle. Marathon, playing with 14 men, made a plucky effort to hold the victors, good performances being given by Young, Campbell, and Stewart. For the victors, Boston, of H.M.S. Dunedin, playing fullback, was a tower of strength, his speedy clearing and smart tackling relieving many ticklish situations. Throughout the game Shore showed superiority in the forward line, while Marathon’s strength lay in the back division. It was a case of the Shore forwards playing the opposing backs. Scorers for Shore were Green and Butland, tries, and Stokes, a conversion. Marathon’s only score was an unconverted try by Campbell. Stokes, for Shore, showed fine kicking ability. Mr. G. Kronfeld refereed.
