RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM
“BARDELYS THE MAGNIFICENT” “Bardelys, the Magnificent,” is the big picture attraction at the Rialto and Regent (Epsom) Theatres this evening. John Gilbert, in the title role of Bardelys, make a fascinating character. A gay gallant of old France who broke hearts and angry rivals’ heads with the same merry recklessness and gay nonchalance, who made the world his playground and “variety” his watchword, who rode and fought and performed impossible athletic feats with the grace and skill of a demi-god—this is “Bardelys” as John Gilbert sees him. In this picture Gilbert has Karl Dane as his valet. Dane contributes much of the humour of the picture, and; further enhances his reputation as a comedian. Eleanor Boardman and Roy D’Arcy are the principal supporting players, and they are brilliant in their respective parts. Miss Boardman’s regal beauty and grace admirably suggest the titled lady of old-France, and Mr. D’Arcy has one at times bitterly resentful with his well simulated villainy. An enjoyable interlude will be supplied by Pic and Alf, black-face comedians of a very high order. A full supporting programme will also be shown. CITY TRAMWAYS DANCE A dance organised by the Rugby Football Committee of the Auckland City Tramways Club will be held in the Kitchener Hall (late Society of Arts) on Wednesday evening. Music will be supplied by Edgar Bendall’s Jazz Band. »
