Huge Number of Divorce Cases To Be Heard By English Courts

(Australian and N.Z. Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Sunday. The list of divorce cases set down for hearing at the Michaelmas sessions totals more than 5,400. The applications for divorce have almost doubled since the new Act providing for the censoring of the publication of details was passed in 1926, when there were 2,973 cases for the year. Women petitioners outnumber men by two to one. Divorce lawyers attribute the alarming increase to the fact that prior to 1926 women preferred to suffer anything rather than face publicity in the Press.
Press Association) However, the lawyers say the increase is also due to the fact that many young women do not attempt to make the best of their married lives. They quarrel with their husbands about the most trivial matters. Some women are said to be even ready to be the legally guilty parties, relying on the fact that their friends need never know the facts. Most of the cases are undefended and occupy about ten minutes before the High. Court or eighteen minutes before tne Assize Courts.
